For people who name their chickens. Six breeds, six personalities. Here's what each one is actually like in the yard — and which one is probably you.
Buff Orpington — the golden-hearted homebody
Famously gentle, easy to hold, and built like a feather pillow. Cold-hardy and very fluffy. She goes broody often — a born mother hen. If your idea of a good Saturday is coffee, a blanket and not leaving the yard, this is your hen.
Barred Rock — the dependable best friend
Black-and-white barring, single red comb, hardy in most climates. Friendly with people and with the rest of the flock. She shows up, she lays, she doesn't make a scene. Everyone needs one.
Rhode Island Red — the hard-working go-getter
An American heritage breed: rugged, adaptable, and full of opinions. Independent enough to run her own agenda. If you're up at dawn with chores done by eight, she's already waiting at the door.
Silkie — the fluffy little dreamer
Fur-like feathers, a pom-pom crest, feathered feet, and a personality that mostly wants to sit on something. Very calm, very gentle, and delighted to go broody over anything remotely egg-shaped.
Easter Egger — the colorful free spirit
Muffs, a beard, and no two alike. She can lay blue or green eggs, which is the entire reason half the flock exists. Curious and people-friendly — the one who inspects your boots.
Silver Laced Wyandotte — the elegant independent
Silver feathers edged in black, a rose comb, and very cold-hardy. Self-assured, a little aloof, and always the best-dressed girl in the run.
